These Children Inspire Us

Jas is a 15-year-old who is being cared for by her mom. She lost her dad when she was eight. Her mom cares for her, her brother, her grandmother, and three orphaned step siblings (there are 12 people in her household). They live with her grandma in a 4-room house which has no electricity or water. Jas’s mom received business training and loans from Power of Love’s micro loans program. She used loan funds to start a stand that sells fruits and charcoal. 

In 2008, Jas was tested for HIV as she had complaints of diarrhea and vomiting. Soon after she enrolled in our pediatric HIV care program and started ARV’s. She and her family receive food, medicines, counseling, training in adherence, malaria bed nets, and education. Post enrollment, her health improved steadily, and she is adhering well to her medication. She is a sixth grader who loves school.  

Brad is a 16-year-old who lives with his HIV+ parents, and three siblings. Both his parents are on treatment for HIV and all his siblings are HIV free.  His family of seven live in a two-room home with no electricity, or water. His father lost his part time job during COVID last year.  His mom sells bread, and they can barely afford two meals per day.

In 2016, Brad tested positive for HIV as he had complaints of diarrhea and stunted growth. He started treatment soon after, but his health did not improve. In 2018, he was enrolled in our pediatric HIV care program. He and his family receive food, medicines, counseling, training in adherence, malaria bed nets, and education. After enrollment, his health stabilized, and he has no complaints now. He adheres to his medication regiment. He is a sixth grader and likes school.
